The Carlyle softball team improved to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the Cahokia Conference Illinois Division with a 2-1, eight-inning win at Wesclin. Wesclin dropped to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Carlyle has won nine of its last 11 games.
The Indians were down 1-0 before scoring a run in the seventh inning and a run in the eighth inning. Sophia Hoffmann singled with one out in the seventh inning. Hoffmann stole second base. Avery Eversgerd doubled to score Hoffmann to tie the game 1-1.
Brianna Suydam reached on an error with two outs in the eighth inning. Brooke Johnson pinch ran for Suydam and stole second base. Raelyn Harris doubled to score Johnson with what proved to be the winning run.
Carlyle pitcher Emma Meyer retired Wesclin in order in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.
Wesclin took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Aisley Toennies reached on an error to start the inning. With one out, Lexie Oster singled. With Toennies on third base and Oster on second base with two outs, Grace Travous singled. Toennies scored on the play. Carlyle center fielder Ella Rolfingsmeyer fired the ball home and Oster was caught in a run down between third and home. Oster was eventually tagged out for the third out.
Sophia Hoffmann had two hits and scored one run. Avery Eversgerd doubled and had an RBI. Emma Meyer had three hits, including a double and triple. Raelyn Harris doubled and had an RBI. Brooke Johnson scored one run.
Lexie Oster had two hits for Wesclin. Ava Spalding doubled. Grace Travous had a hit and an RBI. Hailey Rakers had a hit. Aisley Toennies scored a run.
Emma Meyer threw eight innings for Carlyle, allowing one unearned run on five hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks.
Erin Harpstrite threw eight innings for Wesclin, allowing two runs — one earned — on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
Carlyle hosts East Alton-Wood River on Friday. Wesclin hosts Vandalia for a doubleheader on Saturday.
