ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District released the third and final report today detailing the results of its findings from extensive sampling and testing at Jana Elementary School in Florissant, Missouri. The report, which is focused on soil sampling conducted under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), confirms that the immediate school grounds are safe from a radiological standpoint.

“Like the first two reports released April 25 and May 9, this report also builds upon the preliminary results we shared with the community last November. It provides additional data from our health physics surveys and sampling that confirms there are no areas of radiological concern in or around the school,” said Phil Moser, St. Louis District program manager for FUSRAP. “Our efforts to provide real results to the community continue. We are currently in the process of removing the actual contamination in the Coldwater Creek creekbank which we anticipate completing this fall, to be followed by a separate post remediation report.”

The third report provides additional information and data-driven conclusions about the soil at Jana Elementary School. The report details how the soil outside of the current remediation area meets the criteria for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure and is consistent with reference area background data. These conclusions are supported by a total of 507 soil samples, with 4,563 analytical results, collected from 57 systematic and 21 biased locations to provide datasets that meet the statistical requirements of the program.

USACE plans to hold a public meeting June 8 to discuss the findings of all three reports with the community. More information on this meeting will be forthcoming.

The final reports, also known as Final Status Survey Evaluation reports, are available online under “Jana Elementary Final Reports” and can be viewed here: https://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/Missions/FUSRAP/

USACE remains actively engaged in activities to address community concerns about radioactive material along Coldwater Creek. Following the release of a third-party report indicating the presence of radiological materials at Jana Elementary School in October 2022, USACE determined that its own survey data was necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and teachers at Jana Elementary. USACE completed sampling efforts both inside and outside Jana Elementary School for radiological material in November 2022. In addition to finalizing these reports, USACE is advancing ongoing remediation efforts along Coldwater Creek authorized under FUSRAP.
