ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, plans to demolish the former clubhouse at the closed French Quarter apartment complex in Hazelwood as part of ongoing cleanup efforts under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).
USACE determined demolition is necessary to safely access and remediate contaminated material located directly beneath the structure and below the ground surface near the structure.
“We are following the data and taking the actions needed to advance remediation efforts along Coldwater Creek safely and effectively,” said Col. Andy Pannier, St. Louis District commander. “We will continue to prioritize the health and well-being of the community, guided by data-driven decisions, and keep the community informed throughout the process.”
The decision follows sampling and technical analysis in the clubhouse area. USACE is conducting this work to define the nature and extent of contamination and support remedial action at the site.
The former apartment complex is unoccupied and has been closed for several years. The property owner has installed security fencing to prevent access. Based on current information, the contamination of concern is below the ground surface and does not pose a risk to someone simply being in or around the buildings.
Demolition of the clubhouse will allow USACE to access contaminated material in this area and continue the cleanup process. A demolition timeline has yet to be established. Additional project information will be shared as work progresses.
Based on current data, USACE has not identified any other structures along Coldwater Creek that need to come down at this time.
USACE will also be hosting the next quarterly FUSRAP public meeting May 21 to update the community on current and planned remediation activities under FUSRAP. Additional details are on our website at www.mvs.usace.army.mil.
