ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, and the city of East St. Louis will hold a Project Partnership Agreement signing ceremony Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. for improvements to the 63rd Street Pump Station.

The ceremony will take place at the pump station, near 63rd Street and State Street in East St. Louis. The nearest physical address is 566 N. 63rd St., East St. Louis, IL 62203.

The agreement supports a project under the Environmental Infrastructure Section 219 Program to improve the reliability, safety and operation of the 63rd Street Pump Station, a critical component of the city’s wastewater collection system.

“The St. Louis District looks forward to continuing our partnership with the city of East St. Louis on the 63rd Street Pump Station upgrade as part of USACE’s Environmental Infrastructure Assistance (Section 219) Program,” said Col. Andy Pannier, St. Louis District commander.

The pump station has experienced recurring operational issues in recent years, including pump failures, control malfunctions and valve blockages caused by excessive debris entering the system. Aging infrastructure has also contributed to maintenance and safety concerns at the facility.

Planned improvements include installing a permanent bypass system and in-line grinders, replacing and upgrading pumps, and completing associated valve and pipe work.

Once completed, the project will help improve the reliability of the wastewater collection system, provide a safer working environment for maintenance personnel and reduce risks to public health and the environment.

The Environmental Infrastructure Section 219 Program allows the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to partner with eligible nonfederal sponsors on water-related environmental infrastructure projects authorized by Congress.
