(The Center Square) – U.S. government attorneys are asking a federal judge to give former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan a 12.5-year prison sentence.
In a memorandum sent to Judge John Robert Blakey Friday, prosecutors also asked that Madigan, D-Chicago, pay a fine of $1.5 million for his crimes.
The longtime speaker and Democratic Party of Illinois chairman was convicted Feb. 12 on 10 counts of bribery, conspiracy, wire fraud and use of a facility to promote unlawful activity.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Andrew Boutrous submitted the memorandum along with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Streicker, Diane MacArthur and Julia Schwartz, citing what they called Madigan’s “pervasive corruption, his failure to accept responsibility and obstructive conduct, and the need for deterrence and just punishment.”
Madigan’s sentencing is scheduled June 13 at the Everett McKinley Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago.
