Chicago budget stalemate continues

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says he and his administration will do everything in their power to avoid a city government shutdown as they continue to push a corporate head tax opposed by city council members.

The mayor said Monday he was open to alternative forms of “progressive revenue.”

The city council was scheduled to meet Wednesday, Dec. 10, even after Monday’s finance and budget committee meetings were cancelled.

The council is required by law to pass a budget before Jan. 1.

Pritzker’s health board appointments

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has named a member of former President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 Advisory Board to the State Board of Health.

Joyce Foundation President and CEO Julie Morita previously helped lead the Chicago Department of Health for nearly two decades.

Pritzker also appointed Margarita Teran-Garcia from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Illinois Extension to the state health board.
