Thomas M. “Tom” Eversgerd, age 81, of Germantown, passed away Friday, February 28, 2025. He was born June 27, 1943, in Breese, son of the late Henry J. and Agnes (nee Haukap) Eversgerd.
Tom married Janet I. Eversgerd (nee Toennies) on January 16, 1970, at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville and she survived in Germantown. In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by his daughters, Deanne Emry of Chesterfield, MO, Lisa Eversgerd of Chesaw, WA, Maureen Eversgerd of Superior, CO, and Lynn (Julie Froese) Eversgerd of Columbia, IL; grandchildren, Owen Emry and Paige Emry; siblings, Jack Eversgerd of Bartelso, and Shirley M. Eversgerd of Germantown; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Toni Eversgerd of East Meadows, NY, Virgil Wehking of Bethalto, Charlene Eversgerd of Germantown, Rita Toennies of Damiansville, Bernette Toennies of Germantown, Marie (Greg) Niemeyer of Breese, Bernice “Bim” (Frank) Fuehne of Damiansville, Sharon Toennies of Waterloo, Jane Toennies of Breese, and Germaine Schulte of Trenton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his siblings, Norma Wehking, Dolores (Richard) Kohrmann, Daniel “Butter” Eversgerd, James “Jim” Eversgerd, and William Eversgerd; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Margaret (nee Santel) Toennies; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Emma Toennies in infancy, Lucille (Henry “Jitter”) Albers, Alvin Toennies, Cletus Toennies, Walter (Julie) Toennies, Joseph Toennies, Norman Toennies, Jerry Toennies, and Herb Schulte.
Tom was a proud veteran of the United States Army. Following his service, he worked for the Meat Cutters Local 534 out of Belleville and cut meat at Carlyle Super Valu, served as a Petroleum Salesman for Agri-Pride FS, and was the owner of Wedge Storage in Germantown. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown, the Germantown American Legion Post 325, and the Germantown Community Development Club.
Tom was known to some as “Dewberry” or, in his younger days, “Butch”. He was a laid back and happy man who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: horses in the pasture, feeding the birds, sitting on the front porch swing, laughing with his family around the dinner table, throwing horseshoes and washers, and playing cards with family and friends. Rowdy games of ping-pong were common, as well as calmer afternoons playing Scrabble with his wife. He could be boisterous, especially when telling a story or during a heated Euchre game at Fuehne’s clubhouse on a sunny, Sunday afternoon. He loved to laugh and appreciated a good practical joke. A highlight in his life was competing in the 2004 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. He valued an honest day’s hard work and took pride in a job well done. Tom was always willing to lend a hand, helping where he could. He genuinely valued and loved his family, friends, and hometown community.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown with Fr. Thomas Lugge presiding. Private interment will take place at St. Boniface Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, March 7, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Germantown.
