A family’s Christmas turned into an unimaginable tragedy in Wakefield, New Hampshire, when four members were found dead in their vacation home on Christmas Day. The victims, Matthew Goldstein, 52, his wife Lyla, 54, and their daughters Valerie, 22, and Violet, 19, were from Newton, Massachusetts.

The cause of their deaths has been traced to carbon monoxide poisoning, with officials confirming that a malfunction in the home’s propane gas heating system was responsible. The deadly gas didn’t vent properly, causing it to build up inside the home.

The family had been staying at their home near Province Lake for the holidays but didn’t show up for a holiday gathering. Concerned, family members called for a welfare check, and police arrived to find the four victims already deceased. Carbon monoxide levels inside the house were alarmingly high.

It’s a heart-wrenching reminder of the dangers of this silent, invisible gas. Safety experts stress the importance of having carbon monoxide detectors on every floor—especially during winter when heating systems are running. And make sure to check the batteries every six months. Clear any snow from vents to keep them working properly, and always use generators outdoors.

This is a tough reminder to stay safe, especially during the holidays. The loss of this beloved family is a painful tragedy that has left many in shock. Let’s keep them in our thoughts, and make sure we’re all taking steps to protect our loved ones.
