A new bill to legalize online sports betting has been pre-filed in South Carolina, bringing hope for many who want to see sports betting in the state. It’s not the first time the idea has been pushed – this bill has come up in the legislature before, but it was shot down in 2023. Now, lawmakers are giving it another go.
So, what’s different this time? For one, the bill sets some rules. It limits the market size and offers just eight licenses for operators. There’s also a 12.5% tax on sports betting revenue, which could be a boost for the state’s economy.
Mark Nagel, a professor at the University of South Carolina, says that while sports betting won’t solve all of South Carolina’s problems, it could definitely have a positive impact. He believes the state’s economy could benefit, even if it’s not the “golden goose” that changes everything.
Nagel also points out that sports betting has a long history in the U.S., dating back to the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. But in the last decade, the legalization of sports betting has gained momentum across the country. Many neighboring states have already jumped on board, which could push South Carolina to rethink its stance.
However, not everyone is on board. Governor Henry McMaster has made it clear that he opposes sports betting, saying it doesn’t align with the state’s values.
The next legislative session kicks off on January 14, 2025. Will this bill finally pass? Time will tell!
