Bernice A. Remmert, nee Marti, age 97, of Beaver Prairie, passed away Monday, September 25, 2023 at her home.

 

She was born September 28, 1925 in Pierron, a daughter of the late Joseph and Ida, nee Hirschi, Marti.  She married Eugene Remmert on January 31, 1949 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pierron and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2000.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, Bernice was preceded in death by a son, Michael Remmert; daughter, Bonnie Haas; grandson, Todd Haas; siblings, Earl (Irma) Marti, Pearl (Elmer) Ammann, Richard (Ruby, Dorothy) Marti, Roy Marti, and Robert (Loretta) Marti; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emil and Caroline, nee Rudolph, Remmert; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn Marti and Esther (Ted) Wagg.

 

Bernice is survived by her children, Joyce (Gerald) Huelsmann of Trenton, Peggy (Edward) Holmes of Schererville, IN, and David Remmert of Beaver Prairie; son-in-law, Kenneth Haas of Trenton; daughter-in-law, Deanne Remmert of St. Rose; grandchildren, Jeremy (Yvonne) Huelsmann, Jan (Chad) Winke, Jennifer (Mark) Litteken, Jeffrey (Ashley) Huelsmann, Jessica (Kyle Kendrick) Schomaker, Joshua (Rachel) Huelsmann, Lora (Travis) Meyer, Cheryl (Martin) Son, Randy Washburn, Caroline Holmes, Blake (Samantha) Remmert, and Brooke Remmert; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Leona Marti of Highland and Joseph Marti of Anaheim, CA; and nieces and nephews.

 

Throughout her life, Bernice wore many hats with grace and dedication. She was the former owner of Corner Grocery in Highland, worked in the Bakery Department at Super Valu in Carlyle, and played an integral role in her family’s grain farming operations. Bernice was a devoted member of St. Dominic Parish and Altar Sodality in Breese, an active participant in the Clinton County Homemakers Extension, and a former 4-H Leader. She served as the past president of Breese American Legion Auxiliary Unit 252 and held the distinction of being the past 23rd district president. Bernice also contributed to her community as an Election Judge for Wheatfield Township and served as the Wheatfield Township Tax Assessor. In her leisure time, she enjoyed baking, sewing, bowling, and playing cards with her loved ones.

 

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Patrick Peter presiding.  Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Breese.

 

Visitation will be Thursday, September 28, 2023 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and again Friday, September 29, 2023 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.

 

The Breese American Legion Auxiliary Unit 252 will hold services at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to Breese American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Fund or Mater Dei High School FFA Program and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
