Edith C. Mathis, nee Laufer, age 84, of Carlyle, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 17, 1939 in Baldwin, a daughter of the late George N. and Emma T., nee Henrici, Laufer. She married Leo G. “J.R.” Mathis on March 7, 1957 in Perryville, MO and he died January 23, 2023.
In addition to her parents and husband, Edith was preceded in death by her grandson, Ryan C. Mathis; step-grandson, Ian Faber; siblings, Viola (Frank) Kessler, Russell (Lena) Laufer, Harley Laufer, Earl (Edna) Laufer, Flora (Melvin) Lentz, Ruby (Clarence) Schiber, Otis (Lillian) Laufer, Melba (Raeburn) Leuschke, and Hazel (Pete) Wilson; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charlotte Mae, nee Henson, and Leo G. Mathis, Sr.
Edith is survived by her children, Pamela (Steven) Faber of Pontiac, Tammy (Robert) Lyons of Boulder, Kim (Steven) Spihlmann of Carlyle, and Jeffrey (Dee) Mathis of LaGrange, GA; grandchildren, Brent (Stephanie) Hofbauer, Leslie (Joey) Monahan, Jill Brandt, Julie (Tim) Robert, Janelle (Kyle) Lyons, Jacqulyn Spihlmann, Kristina (Kevin) Schwarz, Lisa (Phillip) Spaulding, Nicholas (Mackenzie) Spihlmann, and Lauren Mathis; step-grandchildren, Brent (friend, Agata) Faber, Adrienne Faber, Hunter Plant, and Sammy Plant; twenty-five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, LaDonna (John) Capozzi of Florida, Sharon (Aaron Phillips) Moody of Florida, Steven (Shelly) Mathis of O’Fallon, and Lynn (Lenny) Loyd of Marissa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edith was a dedicated and hardworking individual, having spent many years as a waitress at Trenton House. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Carlyle and had previously served as the Assistant Director of the Illinois Good Sam camping group. Edith and her beloved husband, J.R., shared a passion for exploring the beauty of the United States, embarking on adventures that took them to all fifty states, forty-nine of these journeys in their cherished motorhome. Edith and J.R. were also regular snowbirds, finding solace and joy in Mesa, Arizona, and they spent two unforgettable summers in Alaska. In her leisure time, Edith pursued her passions for quilting, sewing, gardening, and tending to her yard. But above all, she was a devoted grandmother who loved her many grandchildren with all her heart.
Funeral Service will be Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese with Pastor Scott Broughton officiating. Interment will follow at Percy Village Cemetery in Percy, IL.
Visitation will be Friday, September 22, 2023 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to Clinton County Relay for Life and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
