Calvin Lawson, local DJ and owner of C-Town Sound 360 LLC wanted to do something to give back to the community and create a new vibe for Laura Leake Park. Starting in July he began coordinating get-togethers at Laura Leake Park every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
“Wayback Wednesday is a way to get the community to fellowship, and enjoy the park, and good food while listening to old-school music,” said Calvin.
In previous weeks, special guest Khadijah Brown Haywood, five time world champion women’s basketball player, attended and held a shooting clinic. Other community members have taught line-dancing, performed skateboarding demonstrations and Gus Moss and Moss Elites played a game of basketball.
“Every Wednesday we have something new going on, so come out and join us. We’ve had a crowd every Wednesday along with several food trucks. I’m glad to see people enjoying themselves,” said Calvin.
Calvin encourages positive gatherings for people to come out and relax. He states a few rules. No drama, illegal activities, and no parking on the dance floor.
On Wednesday, September 6, there were two food trucks available, Taco Tuesday Every Tuesday and Big Daddy’s Floating Ribs. Big Daddy’s gave out free hotdogs, chips, and popsicles. Officer Josh Black stopped by and gave candy suckers to the children. A game of basketball and flag football took place while the younger children played on the park equipment.
“The atmosphere takes me back to when I used to pull up at Lincoln Square Garden,” says Calvin.
