ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District released the first of three final reports today detailing the results of its findings from extensive sampling and testing at Jana Elementary School in Florissant, Missouri. The report, which is focused on the structural sampling conducted under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), confirms that the school is safe from a radiological standpoint.

“This final report builds upon the preliminary results we shared with the community last November and provides additional data from our structural surveys and sampling, all of which have confirmed that there are no radiological concerns within the school,” said Phil Moser, St. Louis District program manager for FUSRAP. “Our efforts do not stop here. We are preparing two additional reports on our sampling and testing efforts and will make this information available within the next few months to continue to share data with the community and keep everyone informed.”

The first report, or Final Status Survey Evaluation (FSSE), is for the surfaces of structures used by the school for educational and recreational purposes. Indoor testing included floors, tables, cabinets, desks, bookshelves, ducting and piping, and kitchen equipment. Outdoor tests included pavement and recreational equipment. The surface testing also included the lower 2 meters of interior and exterior walls.

The two final reports currently under development will provide additional data on the sampling and testing activities that occurred inside and outside the school building and on the playground. These reports will be released within the next few months. Additionally, USACE plans to hold a public meeting following the release of the third report to discuss the findings of all three reports with the community.

The first Final Status Survey Evaluation report is available online and can be viewed here:

USACE remains actively engaged in activities to address community concerns about radioactive material along Coldwater Creek. Following the release of a third-party report indicating the presence of radiological materials at Jana Elementary School in October 2022, USACE determined that their own survey data was necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and teachers at Jana Elementary. USACE completed sampling efforts both inside and outside Jana Elementary School for radiological material in November 2022. The sampling included taking 922 structural measurements and analyzing 790 soil samples. In addition to finalizing these reports, USACE is also advancing ongoing remediation efforts along Coldwater Creek authorized under FUSRAP.
