The C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library in Mt. Vernon is going fine free. There are no longer fines on overdue books and other materials. You still have to pay for lost or damaged materials.

Please do not leave donations in the book drop.

Brehm Library offers a variety of classes and special presentations. Below are some of their upcoming events.

Josie B’s Book Club offers discussion, crafts, and snacks for girls ages 9-12. The next meeting will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20. Call 618-242-6322 ext. 4 to RSVP, for information on selected book and to reserve a copy.

Summer reading programs are for ages 2-102. Register on Beanstack.com. Logged reading will need to be entered by midnight July 31. Summer reading programs are listed below.

July 17, Glen Foster, Magician, 10: 00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Come for great laughs, illusions, and magical fun. It’s time for mayhem with an award-winning comedy magician and entertainer! Get ready to grin from ear to ear.

July 24, Roz Puppets 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Children and adults alike will enjoy the puppets as they journey through classic fairytales and original stories with a humorous storytelling style that incorporates music and audience participation.

July 31, Animal Tales 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. A C.E. Brehm favorite. Their theme this year is “Animal Alliances”: Animals helping one another. Animal Tales doesn’t simply lecture, but involves the crowd to help facilitate a memorable learning experience. Be prepared to get up close and personal with unique animals like you’ve never seen.

Aug. 7, Chef Bananas Foam Party and SRP Awards, 2:00 p.m. For those who complete the Summer Reading Program and earn at least three badges, prizes will be given on this day. A foam party is an interactive experience with the Library’s awesome foam cannon that shoots out foam and can fill an area of up to 50×50 ft. and 6 ft. high in minutes. Bring towels because you will get wet.

Looking for work? Try Mantracon for help. Join them from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Meeting Room. They will explain how Mantracon works and help you fill out forms for job seeking. The next session will be held on July 20.

Family Movie Night will be held on July 28. Kids must be accompanied by an adult and adults must be accompanied by a kid. Because of the licensing agreement they can’t advertise what movies they will be showing, so call them at 618-242-6322 to find out the movie being shown. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Movie starts at 7:00 p.m.

There will be a Game Day at the library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 29. There will be board games, card games, and role-playing games. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Story Time will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Library on Wednesday mornings in August. Join the group for stories read aloud. They will have a fun craft/activity that goes along with the theme for the day. Suitable for children ages 3-5. Registration is required for most children’s programs, so please call 618-242-6322 Ext. 4 for more information.

A Rip and Stitchers Knitting and Crochet Workshop will be offered from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 1. Patrons who have taken a beginning class of crochet and/or knitting are welcome. Patrons who know how to crochet and knit are also welcome. This group is not for beginners. Patrons must have a C.E Brehm Adult card in good standing. They will meet the first Tuesday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Patrons must sign up to attend. Please call 618-242-6322, ext. 2, to register.

Monthly take & make craft kits are available on the first Tuesday of each month. Kits are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. The craft kits will be available on Aug. 2.

Interested in learning how to play an RPG (Role Playing Game)? Join the library’s “Teen Tabletop RPG Group.” No experience necessary. They will have a morning group at 10:30 and an afternoon session at 1:00, each with four available slots. The group will next meet on Aug. 12. Call 618-242-6322 ext. 2 to register.

A Library Learners Homeschool Meet Up will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Aug. 15. Learn to utilize library resources for a successful homeschool experience. Meet fellow home educators to share ideas, triumphs, challenges, and concerns.

Tweens and Teens Awesome Art and Board Games for ages 11 through 18 will be offered from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Create your own art. Play a board game. Join the group for coloring, watercolors and games. Materials will be provided. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The next event will be held on Aug. 15. Call 618-242-6322 ext. 2 to register.
