Scott Air Force Base News: 366th MDG Engages in Aeromedical Evacuation Training

The 375th Aeromedical Evacuation Training Squadron conducted an aeromedical evacuation exercise for Airmen from the 366th Medical Group on a C-17 Globemaster III from the 445th Airlift Wing at Mountain Home Air Force Base June 6, 2024.

Airmen from multiple sections of the 366th MDG received hands-on training in four critical areas of patient airlift operations to include patient preparation, patient bagging procedures, anti-hijacking actions and patient loading.

“This type of integration between the medical aircrew and the medical treatment facility is crucial for the survivability of wounded warriors,” said Senior Master Sgt. Maya Guillen-Knox, the senior enlisted leader of the 375th AETS. “All technicians, nurses, and support staff in the Air Force medical services play a hand in the successful execution involved with patient movement and patient care.”

Airmen were also familiarized with the inside of the C-17 and the process of loading and unloading a litter. This allowed Airmen to have first-hand experience of the aeromedical evacuation process in a louder, unfamiliar environment.

“While we do practice these skills through watching videos, computer-based training and performing on simulated aircraft, there’s nothing quite like the unique experience of stepping onto an actual C-17,” said Maj. Kelly Miller, the education and training flight commander of the 366th MDG. “The impact of the hands-on training experience, such as the chance to carry a patient up the ramp and lift them onto the stanchions, is something that will not only be unforgettable, but also significantly enhance medics’ skills.”

This training aimed to meet the FY24 Aeromedical Evacuation/En Route Care System Patient Safety Goals for the 366th MDG as well as the aeromedical evacuation crew members.
