The Central baseball team extended its school-record start to 17-0 after an 11-1, five-inning win over New Athens.
The Cougars were down 1-0 going into the bottom of the first inning. Central scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars added three runs in the second inning, four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning.
Hunter Sample pitched five innings, allowing one run on one hit with seven strikeouts.
Central had 13 hits.
Landon Geragosian and Easton Rakers both had two hits, including a double, with two runs scored. Chase Lewis had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Hunter Sample had two hits, including a double, with one RBI and one run scored. Jonathan Husmann had a triple, RBI and run scored. Ty Kueper had a double, RBI and run scored. Dalton Boruff had a hit, two RBIs and one run scored. Cody Dickshot had a hit, RBI and two runs scored. Conner Freeze had a hit and an RBI.
Central plays a doubleheader at Mascoutah on Saturday. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
