The Carlyle St. Mary’s sixth-grade (blue) basketball team had a strong showing at the St. Mary’s 6th Grade Tournament. St. Mary’s went 3-1 and took second place in the gold tracket. The Crusaders only loss was a 46-44 overtime setback to Teutopolis. Teutopolis won the gold bracket.
St. Mary’s opened the tournament on Friday by beating Bartelso. The Crusaders lost to Teutopolis on Saturday. St. Mary’s won two games on Sunday, beating Vandalia 36-17 and beating Aviston 32-27.
Ethan Peebles had 13 points to lead St. Mary’s against Vandalia. Bennett Snyder had seven points. Hunter Hochbaum had six points. Benson Schmeink had four points. Austin Johnson, Colin Rahm and Dean Frank all had two points each.
Ethan Peebles led St. Mary’s with 15 points against Aviston. Colin Rahm had 10 points. Bennett Snyder had five points. Hunter Hochbaum had two points. Dominic Koopman and Owen Kehrer both had nine points for Aviston. Jude Koopman had six points. Maddox Rakers had two points. Brady Eversgerd had one point.
St. Mary’s led 5-4 after the first quarter. St. Mary’s had a 14-6 lead in the second quarter after a Colin Rahm 3-pointer. St. Mary’s led 17-8 at halftime.
Ethan Peebles made a basket to put St. Mary’s up 19-8 in the third quarter. Aviston ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to get within 19-15. St. Mary’s went on a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter to take a 26-15 lead. Aviston went on an 8-0 run to get within 26-23. St. Mary’s scored six of the final 10 points of the game for the 32-27 victory.
