The No. 1 seed Central boys basketball team beat No. 4 seed Mater Dei 46-30 to win the Class 2A Regional at Wesclin.
Central improved to 27-5 and avenged a 32-25 regular-season loss to Mater Dei. The Cougars have won 15 of their last 17 games. Mater Dei finished its season 20-12.
Central never trailed in the victory.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the game and led 7-2 after the opening quarter. Central outscored Mater Dei 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 21-8 lead into halftime. Mater Dei had got within 9-6 in the second quarter before Central went on a 10-0 run to take a 19-6 lead.
Central led 32-18 after the third quarter. The Cougars scored the first six fourth-quarter points to take a 38-18 lead. Mater Dei got no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.
Senior Luke Strubhart led Central with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Mason Shubert had 13 points. Junior Cody Dickshot had 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Brady Moore had four points and five rebounds. Senior Dalton Boruff had three points.
Senior Cameron Haag led Mater Dei with 12 points. Junior Dalton Markus had six points. Senior Jayce Napovanice had four points. Sophomore Drake Wagner had three points. Senior Jacob Patton and junior Cole Peppenhorst both had two points each. Sophomore Nick Lampe had one point.
Mater Dei graduates Cade Kramer, Cameron Haag, Jayce Napovanice, Landon Albers, Jacob Patton and Mitchell Broeckling from this year’s team.
Central plays No. 2 seed Massac County in the Class 2A Sectional at Carterville at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
