New Baden American Legion Post 321 held the first clean-up effort for its new Adopt a Highway program on Saturday May 1 and is looking for volunteers in the community to help with it. It will be focused on Route 161. Participants will walk along the roadside and pick up trash to keep it looking nice.

Amon the individuals who helped get this community betterment project going are two men who ran for mayor in New Baden in April, Rafael Him and Randy Linthicum.

The Adopt-A-Highway program has been responsible for collecting 300,000 pounds of trash in 48,000 bags by keeping 60,000 highways clean all over the United States. Sponsors in most locations are recognized with signs alongside the highways they keep clean.

Joining in an effort like this gives everyone community pride and a chance to get some exercise. If you are interested in joining in, go by the American Legion at 105 East Illinois Street in New Baden and let them know
