Ironically being held the night before Election Day when voters will select a new mayor, the public hearing for the new budget in New Baden is Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Anyone can comment on the budget during the hearing which will end at 7 p.m. when the Village Board meeting starts.
The budget is available for inspection at the village hall during its opening hours which begin at 8:30 Monday morning. You can participate in the hearing by getting on Zoom or calling 321-626-6799 and using the meeting ID of 292 588 6745. This is also the same way to get into the Village Board meeting on Zoom.
Anyone who wants to comment at the Village Board meeting, not the budget hearing, needs to contact the Village Clerk, Teri Crane, before 2 p.m. Monday by e mail to email@example.com or calling 618-588-3813. You don’t have to make a reservation to make a comment for the budget hearing.
The budget is 59 pages long. It covers revenue and expenses for the next year starting May 1. The Village Board plans to vote on approving it at their next meeting on April 19.
The General Fund is the biggest part of the budget. There are also sections on many other things the village spends money on like water, sewer, emergency services, legion memorial pool, library, civic center, park, capital improvements, the Caylin Ridge SSA, TIF District #2 (I-64) and Business District #1.
The Village Board voted in December to increase the tax levy for this year, estimated at over per cent higher than the last year. What you actually pay in higher taxes is unknown until your property is assessed.
Higher taxes was one of the main items discussed in the campaign for the election by those people running for mayor and the trustees’ seats on the Village Board. Voting will be at the Billhartz Civic Center on Tuesday.
